Thursdays Decluttering Project: Cleaning out under the bed pt1

Thursday is project day. Project Day is my favourite because I get to be Spontaneous and focus on whatever I feel like that day. Last week I cleaned windows. This week I had my focus directed by our plan to borrow my father in laws carpet steamer on the weekend. I needed to clean under the bed. We have mildew problems in the bedroom in particular.

I had a beautiful rug that I got rid of because it was full of mildew but though the rug is gone the mildew remains. Some of the stuff was shoved under there, some of it fell under there, and some of it I intentionally or semi intentionally stored there.

Even though I pride myself in keeping the bedroom from becoming a dumping ground, it turns out that specific spot was in fact my dumping ground. There was a lot of dust, a lot of mildew, and even worse I found dead moths. I think the moths have been eating my old journals. The longer things had been under there the worse it was. I wonder if they are in fact the same moths that I had at the first house I lived in on my own, because I haven't gone through that box in a long time.

I'll follow up this post with a discussion of sorting out my old creative writing papers, and finding homes for everything. But for now I just want to share with you the pictures.

My decluttering Supplies

Before

I took a memo from Dana K White at A Slob Comes Clean and prepared a donation box and a black trash bag. I also grabbed a basket for my journals because I planned to keep storing them. I may blog about decluttering but I'm not a minimalist.

Hard decisions
I tore apart a journal so I could keep the pages and ran across a hard decision. Hard for me at least. Probably easy if you don't have ADHD. I really wanted to keep this piece of cardboard and this wire. I really wanted to keep them. I didn't. Because I don't specifically need either of those at this moment.

Once I made those hard decisions I was ready to move on to easy things, like storing my collection of diaries.

I had a box, but it wasn't very stable so I taped it in the necessary places. Then I prepared it for storing my books  picking some fresh lavender to keep away the bugs and tying it up with a pretty piece of yarn.

And it's labelled!
Then I put all the books in the box and marked it with the last time it had been opened and what it was. This way I can actually find my journals when I want to check something!

As I said, there were a few other projects but that is the only one I'm going to discuss today.

After that it was time for cleanup!

Decluttered but not clean

Clean! Except the mildew
After vacuuming and wiping the baseboards I set the air purifier on the floor to hopefully clean up some of that airborn mildew. Later I gave up on the air purifier and just opened a window. This is why we have to steam clean our carpets on the weekend!

After that all I had to deal with was my memories, or rather these two boxes of objects that I wanted to keep but didn't have a place to put. I'll talk about that in part 2!

But before I did that I remembered to take a break. I sat down and read for ten minutes before starting a new project. This is the most important part of any task because it means I won't hurt myself. I was getting tired at the end and definitely walked into a door AND dropped a book on my foot.
