Friday July 13, bedroom steam cleaning

Today I have only one item on my to do list: Finish my cover letter. Today and tomorrow are functioning as my weekend. My Best Friend works on Sundays, so we moved our big hang out for the week to Fridays.

I've self -assigned days off after trying to do a little on my Summer Projects every day. I'm slowly learning that it isn't about doing things every day. Habits can develop even if you do them only once a year. I have a set of habits for Celebrating Winter Holidays. That only happens once a year, but those habits are still there. I'm not sure why people suggest doing things every single day, but most of them aren't necessary. Dishes, yes. Brushing and flossing, yes. Reading academic Journal Articles, no. Doing work regularly helps because then you don't get behind, but it doesn't have to be every day. On reflection, I guess it is likely that people who suggest that don't do it either, it's the ideal and not the reality. But I don't even want to aim for it, because it messes up my ability to schedule. If I plan to be working all day then I can't spend time with friends. Maybe I won't end up working all day but I also won't socialise. And that's just procrastinating on life!

What got done

Unplanned:

Steam cleaning: We steam cleaned the bedroom carpet! I suggested to my wife after dinner that we prepare one of the two rooms with wall to wall carpets for steam cleaning. I didn't expect her to have the energy to actually to the cleaning tonight, but she did! And thanks to my work over the last few weeks there wasn't any clutter in there. Yes, there was furniture and some small things, but there wasn't any STUFF lying under the bed or tucked in random locations. So we moved everything out of the bedroom and steam cleaned.

Frankly I was a little disappointed. I think I was expecting a bigger visual difference. I guess these are old carpets that weren't in perfect condition when I moved in five years ago, but I thought more stains would come out, especially with spot treatment and scrubbing. That said the carpet now has more spring and life to it then it did before, and much less hair and dirt, so I'm happy we did it.

We moved the bed back in but left every thing else until tomorrow when the carpet is dry.

Planned:
Martial arts
Blogging
Spend time with Best Friend and Wife
Dishes
Sweeping
5 Minute Pickup

It is so much harder to do daily routines when the contents of an entire room are out of place! I made my way through it, but found that it took a lot more focus to do basic things like dishes when there were bedroom things on the kitchen table. And a five minute pickup is a nightmare. Where would I put THE ENTIRE BED? Well, obviously in the bedroom. But I can't, because it's drying.

What didn't

Cover letter
Dusting and straightening.

But today I'll say that's fine, because what did get done was so worth while.
